The Transhumanist Case for Space
Overview
- Work_type:: essay/argument
- Setting:: Human civilization beginning serious space development
- Scale:: Primarily interplanetary; interstellar only as distant aspiration
- Transhuman_type:: hybrid
- Mechanism:: Incremental bodily and cognitive enhancements tailored to space environments
- Degree_of_change:: Moderate to high; still recognizably human but increasingly engineered
Survival logic
- Survival_strategy:: Use enhancement to handle radiation, low gravity, isolation, and long-term space living
- Key_technologies:: Genetic tweaks, cybernetic implants, advanced life support integrated with the body
- Main_constraints_addressed:: Human fragility, limited lifespan, and psychological stress in space
View on baseline humanity
- View_on_baseline:: continuity
- Attitude:: Baseline humans are starting point; enhancements extend their capabilities rather than discard them
- Identity_question:: Sees enhanced humans as moral and cultural continuations of present-day people
Notes
- Themes:: Transhumanism as practical survival strategy, not just philosophy
- Open_questions:: Ethical limits of enhancement for space settlers
