Recommend sturdy and useful playa bicycles for two people to use on Playa, with all the safety features needed, plus lights and security. Create a price list for your recommendation. Then, create a shopping list with prices and sources for all the things you just recommended for the week at Burning Man.
I’ll price real playa-ready bikes and then build a sourced shopping list for the two-person kit from the last guide.
Compiling the comprehensive shopping list with prices
Working for
Best playa bikes for two people: two single-speed 26″ beach cruisers with wide tires, coaster brakes, a sprung saddle, and a kickstand. That is the standard burner recommendation because the playa is flat, dust wrecks derailleurs, and you want something you can fix with a multi-tool.
E-bikes work for mobility needs, but they add charging, dust in the controller, and theft risk. Skip them unless someone needs the assist.
Full Two-Person Shopping List
Bike recommendation
Primary pick (sturdy, still simple)
Two Schwinn Huron 1 or Schwinn Baywood 1 26″ single-speed cruisers.
- 26″ wheels, ~2.1″ tires, steel frame, coaster brake, upright position
- About $300 each at Walmart
- Better hardware than a $80 clearance Huffy, still easy to service after the burn
Budget pick
Two Huffy Cranbrook 26″ cruisers. Same job, thinner components. About $170–$190 new at Walmart; clearance sometimes lower. Fine if you accept more rattles and a post-event rebuild.
Used option
Local Facebook Marketplace / Reno Craigslist 26″ cruiser, $50–$150, then put new tires, tubes, lights, and a lock on it. Best value if you can inspect the bike.
Fit both riders before you buy. Step-through (women’s/mixte) frames are easier in costumes and when tired.
Required safety, lights, and security (per bike)
| Item | Why | Typical price | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| USB front light, 600–800 lm (Cygolite Metro Plus 800 or combo) | Night riding is required; whiteouts and dark streets | $50–$76 combo | Amazon |
| USB red tail light | Rear visibility | often in combo | Amazon |
| Extra reflective tape + spoke lights | Dust storms kill battery lights | $12 | Amazon / Walmart |
| Bell | Crowded Esplanade | $8 | Walmart |
| Helmet | Not required, strongly worth it | $25–$40 | Walmart / REI |
| Kryptonite Keeper 785 chain or 790 combo chain | U-lock + cable is better than a $10 cable alone | $39–$67 | Amazon |
| 4-ft cable for second wheel / basket | Stops easy wheel theft | $15 | Amazon |
| Luggage tag + paint marker with camp address | Lost bikes | $5 | Walmart |
| Kickstand pad (tennis ball or wide foot) | Kickstands sink in soft playa | $3 | Walmart |
| Front basket or milk-crate rack | Water, layers, gifts | $20–$35 | Walmart / Amazon |
| Floor pump + 2 tubes (26 × 2.125) + patch kit | Soft playa + thorns + heat | $35 | Walmart / bike shop |
| Chain lube (dry) + rag | One wipe after first dust storm | $10 | Walmart |
Combination locks beat keys on playa. Keys vanish in dust. Never leave an unlocked “it’ll be fine” bike at a sound camp.
Bicycle price list (two people)

| Schwinn Huron 1 / Baywood 1 26″ cruiser | 2 | $300 | $600 |

7. Vehicle / power extras (if you don’t already have them) — ~$200–$400
Traction boards, spare, compressor, secondary fuel containment bin, jump pack, ratchet straps for the load, cheap solar panel + power station if you run lights/Starlink. Skip a generator if you can; rain kills them.
Running totals (two people, buy-new primary path)
| Bucket | Estimate |
|---|---|
| Bikes + safety/lights/locks | $1,075 |
| Water system | $280 |
| Shelter + sleep | $900 |
| Clothes / dust / sun | $280 |
| Kitchen gear | $180 |
| Food | $425 |
| Medical / lights / tools | $320 |
| Vehicle extras (optional) | $250 |
| Working total | about $3,700 |
| Without optional vehicle extras | about $3,450 |
| Budget bikes (Huffy) instead of Schwinn | about $3,200 |
That does not include the truck/RV, tickets, fuel to Gerlach, or ice bought on playa.
What I would actually buy first
- Two Schwinn single-speed 26″ cruisers
- Two USB light combos and two Kryptonite chain locks
- Eight 7-gal water jugs and a 10×20 anchored shade
- Goggles + masks before any costume
Put camp address on both bikes, both helmets, and both water bottles. If a dust storm hits, walk the bikes; do not ride in mud. Ice is the only thing you can count on buying in Black Rock City; everything on this list has to arrive with you.

I'd like to investigate a tricked-out pair of bicycles, with wheel lights, a lit flag, a light-trimmed frame, a headlight, a basket to carry water, food, and gifts, and all the spare parts and tools to maintain the bike through a couple weeks on the playa with a few break-downs.
Tricked-out Bicycles
Build two single-speed 26″ cruisers (Schwinn Huron 1 / Baywood 1, or similar), then dress them as rolling lanterns with cargo. Keep the drivetrain dumb and put the trickery in lights, a tall flag, and a bolted-on basket. Dust will kill fancy electronics first; zip-ties and spare batteries keep the show running.
The two bikes
| Item | Qty | Unit | Line | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Schwinn Huron 1 or Baywood 1, 26″ single-speed | 2 | $300 | $600 | Walmart |
| Tune-up + true wheels + grease before departure | 2 | $40 | $80 | Local bike shop |
If you already own cruisers, skip the $600 and spend it on lights and parts.
Lighting package (per bike, then ×2)
1. Real headlight + tail (safety, not decoration)
Cygolite Metro Plus 800 + Hotshot-style tail combo, USB rechargeable. Mount the headlight on the bars, tail on the seatpost and a second red flasher high on the flag so it stays visible in a crowd.
- Combo: about $76 each → $152 for two
- Source: Amazon
2. Wheel lights
Use two layers: a cheap AAA spoke-strip set plus a better hub/spoke pack. WheelBrightz 2026 edition is the most playa-proven consumer kit.
| Item | Qty | Unit | Line | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Brightz WheelBrightz 2-pack (front+rear) | 2 packs | $27 | $54 | Amazon |
| Spare TINANA / generic 2-wheel LED strip pack | 2 packs | $14 | $28 | Amazon |
| AAA batteries (48-count) | 1 | $16 | $16 | Costco / Amazon |
Tape battery boxes shut with electrical tape. Carry the spare strip packs unopened.
3. Frame trim
USB RGB LED strip kits that wrap the top tube, down tube, and fork. Power them from a small power bank in a dry bag in the basket, not from coin cells.
| Item | Qty | Unit | Line | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| USB RGB frame-strip kit (~2 m / 2 strips + remote) | 2 | $18–$38 | $50 | Amazon / Monster Scooter kit ~$38 |
| 10,000 mAh power bank | 2 | $25 | $50 | Amazon |
| Extra zip-ties + electrical tape | — | $10 | $10 | hardware |
Do not wrap strips over the chain, brakes, or tire. Leave the crank and kickstand clear.
4. Lit flag (visibility in whiteout and at 3:00 plaza)
A 5.5–6 ft fiberglass safety flag with a built-in LED string is the simplest “lit flag.” Add a small white flasher at the top facing forward and a red one facing back.
| Item | Qty | Unit | Line | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| LED fiberglass bike flag, ~5.5–6 ft + orange/custom pennant | 2 | $22 | $44 | Amazon |
| Rear axle / seatstay flag mount (if not included) | 2 | $12 | $24 | Amazon / Jagerbikes $10 pole |
| Extra clip-on mini flasher for flag tip | 2 | $12 | $24 | Amazon |
| Custom fabric flag (camp colors, no glitter/sequins) | 2 | $10 | $20 | fabric store |
Use fiberglass, not metal. A rigid pole becomes a spear in a crash or dust-storm pileup. Sew or zip-tie EL wire only if you already know how to seal the inverter from dust; the LED string flag is more reliable for two weeks.
Basket and cargo
Wald 137 / 1372 is the playa standard: steel, axle-strut supported, about 15″ × 10″ × 5″. That holds two water bottles, a snack bag, and a small gift stash without folding.
| Item | Qty | Unit | Line | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Wald 1372 front basket (black, adjustable legs) | 2 | $40 | $80 | bike shop / Performance / Crust |
| Cargo net or bungee web | 2 | $10 | $20 | Walmart |
| Two insulated bottles per bike (or 1 bladder + 1 bottle) | 4 | $15 | $60 | REI |
| Small dry bag for power banks + snacks | 2 | $12 | $24 | Amazon |
| Reflective webbing to lash gifts | 2 | $8 | $16 | hardware |
Keep basket loads under ~15 lb. Water in a CamelBak on your back is safer than 2 gallons bouncing over the axle.
Spare parts and tools (shared kit for two bikes, two weeks, a few breakdowns)
Assume 26″ × 2.1–2.125″ Schrader tubes, coaster brake, single-speed chain.
Wear items
| Item | Qty | Price | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| 26 × 2.125 Schrader tubes | 6 | $36 | Heat + playa grit + pinch flats |
| 26 × 2.125 tires | 2 | $40 | One spare each; swap if a sidewall cuts |
| Patch kit + extra glue | 2 | $12 | Slow leaks at 2 a.m. |
| Single-speed chain + 4 master links | 1 chain + links | $25 | Dust-chewed chain |

Build order that survives playa
- Assemble and ride each bike 10 miles at home. Fix rattles now.
- Bolt the Wald basket to the axle struts, not just the bars.
- Mount the real headlight and tail first. Then wheels, then frame strips, then flag.
- Zip-tie every wire twice. Tape every battery door. Put a label with camp address + name on frame, basket, and lock.
- Charge power banks every morning. Run wheel lights and flags on flash, not solid, to save batteries.
- After the first dust storm: wipe the chain, check spoke lights, retape battery boxes.
What not to do
- Glitter, sequins, or shedding fur on the flag (MOOP).
- A rigid metal flagpole.
- A speaker so loud you cannot hear art cars.
- Relying on wheel LEDs as the only front light. They are art; the Cygolite is the light that keeps you from T-boning a bike in a whiteout.
- Overloading the basket until the front wheel washes out in soft playa.
Ride them at night once before you leave. If a light dies, a zip-tie fails, or the flag fouls the wheel, you want that lesson in a driveway, not at 10:00 and Esplanade.
