I'd like to investigate a tricked-out pair of bicycles, with wheel lights, a lit flag, a light-trimmed frame, a headlight, a basket to carry water, food, and gifts, and all the spare parts and tools to maintain the bike through a couple weeks on the playa with a few break-downs.
Tricked-out Bicycles
Build two single-speed 26″ cruisers (Schwinn Huron 1 / Baywood 1, or similar), then dress them as rolling lanterns with cargo. Keep the drivetrain dumb and put the trickery in lights, a tall flag, and a bolted-on basket. Dust will kill fancy electronics first; zip-ties and spare batteries keep the show running.

1. Real headlight + tail (safety, not decoration)
Cygolite Metro Plus 800 + Hotshot-style tail combo, USB rechargeable. Mount the headlight on the bars, tail on the seatpost and a second red flasher high on the flag so it stays visible in a crowd.

3. Frame trim
USB RGB LED strip kits that wrap the top tube, down tube, and fork. Power them from a small power bank in a dry bag in the basket, not from coin cells.

Do not wrap strips over the chain, brakes, or tire. Leave the crank and kickstand clear.
4. Lit flag (visibility in whiteout and at 3:00 plaza)
A 5.5–6 ft fiberglass safety flag with a built-in LED string is the simplest “lit flag.” Add a small white flasher at the top facing forward and a red one facing back.

Use fiberglass, not metal. A rigid pole becomes a spear in a crash or dust-storm pileup. Sew or zip-tie EL wire only if you already know how to seal the inverter from dust; the LED string flag is more reliable for two weeks.
Basket and cargo
Wald 137 / 1372 is the playa standard: steel, axle-strut supported, about 15″ × 10″ × 5″. That holds two water bottles, a snack bag, and a small gift stash without folding.

Build order that survives playa
- Assemble and ride each bike 10 miles at home. Fix rattles now.
- Bolt the Wald basket to the axle struts, not just the bars.
- Mount the real headlight and tail first. Then wheels, then frame strips, then flag.
- Zip-tie every wire twice. Tape every battery door. Put a label with camp address + name on frame, basket, and lock.
- Charge power banks every morning. Run wheel lights and flags on flash, not solid, to save batteries.
- After the first dust storm: wipe the chain, check spoke lights, retape battery boxes.
What not to do
- Glitter, sequins, or shedding fur on the flag (MOOP).
- A rigid metal flagpole.
- A speaker so loud you cannot hear art cars.
- Relying on wheel LEDs as the only front light. They are art; the Cygolite is the light that keeps you from T-boning a bike in a whiteout.
- Overloading the basket until the front wheel washes out in soft playa.
Ride them at night once before you leave. If a light dies, a zip-tie fails, or the flag fouls the wheel, you want that lesson in a driveway, not at 10:00 and Esplanade.
