I intend to stop in Rye, actually a cabin near Lake Isabel. Then, Black Rock City will be a7-14 day stay in Black Rock City. We may volunteer to clean up the Playa after the burn. Heading home, We'd stop at least in Las Vegas, and other places along the way.
What are the natural stop and rest points along the way? We'd like to drive a ways and then get a full night's rest. Given next year's festival dates on August 29th (Sunday 12 AM) to September 6th (Labor Day), what would a safe travel plan be for driving on this route. Then, back it up to plan for packing, and for unpacking afterward.
Treat this as two long road trips wrapped around a desert city, not one 54-hour drive. Comfortable days in a loaded CR-V Hybrid are 7–9 hours of wheel time, then a full night in a real bed. Opening Sunday and Labor Day Exodus are the two times that plan should flex.
2027 event frame (confirm on burningman.org when tickets drop)
Gate: 12:01 a.m. Sunday, August 29
Man burn: Saturday, September 4
Temple: Sunday, September 5
Official close: 6 p.m. Monday, September 6 (Labor Day)
Exodus crush: Sunday night through Tuesday, September 8
DPW teardown: roughly Tuesday after close through mid-September
Playa restoration: after teardown, often mid–late September — that is an application, not a walk-on.

Your Maps line is the northern path: Texas plains → Colorado cabin → Utah / Salt Lake corridor → I-80 → SR 447 → playa, then south on US-95 to Vegas and I-40 home. That is the right shape. Do not add a same-day Gate attempt onto the last 14-hour stretch.
Natural overnight towns
Frisco → cabin
- Wichita Falls, TX — early lunch, not a night.
- Amarillo, TX — best first hotel. Big-box stores if you forgot a bin.
- Raton, NM or Trinidad, CO — only if you leave late and do not want Raton Pass in the dark.
- Pueblo, CO — last full grocery / hardware before the cabin.
- Cabin at 141 Co Rd 370 / Lake Isabel — recovery night, not a “we still have energy” night.
Cabin → playa
- Salida or Gunnison if you take US-50 west.
- Grand Junction, CO — solid full-service night.
- Green River or Salina, UT — smaller, but honest midway.
- Provo or Salt Lake City — last cheap hotel density and a real grocery.
- Elko or Winnemucca, NV — last easy I-80 beds.
- Reno or Fernley — last guaranteed fuel, ice, water top-off, and a shower. From Fernley it is still ~2 hours to Gerlach and then Gate Road. Do not skip this fill-up.
Playa → Vegas
- Reno if you want a hotel-and-car-wash first (adds time, saves sanity).
- Tonopah — classic US-95 halfway. Limited rooms during Exodus week; book.
- Beatty — last small stop before Vegas.
- Las Vegas — mandatory decompression: wash the CR-V, dump gray habits, eat a vegetable, sleep in AC.
Vegas → Frisco
- Kingman or Flagstaff, AZ
- Gallup, NM or Albuquerque
- Amarillo or Wichita Falls
- Home.
Book Amarillo, Grand Junction or SLC, Reno/Fernley, Vegas, Albuquerque as soon as the cabin nights are fixed. Labor Day week eats rooms.

This is the conservative version: cabin rest, no all-nighter into Gate, and a choice between a 9-day city stay and a cleanup-extended stay.

If you insist on being there when the city “starts,” flip it: leave Frisco Tue Aug 24, cabin Wed 25, drive Thu–Fri, Fernley Sat Aug 28, roll into the staging lot Saturday evening, sleep in the car, go through Gate after 12:01 a.m. Sunday. That is legal and common. It is also worse sleep. The Monday arrival above is the safer play for two people in a CUV.

Homebound (you stayed to help clean)
Slide the Vegas night to whenever your last shift ends, then keep the same two- or three-day I-40 return. Do not drive Fernley → Frisco on fumes and no sleep. Restoration crews are tired in a different way than event-week tired.
Unpack plan (treat it like the trip)

Rules that keep this plan safe
- Never stack a 14-hour mountain day and Gate on the same date.
- Last fuel and water before SR 447 is Fernley/Reno, not Gerlach.
- Labor Day Monday is a holiday on the I-15/I-40 corridor; Vegas hotels and Flagstaff rooms spike.
- If rain hits the playa, your “Tue Sep 7 leave” becomes “we live here until it dries.” Build two spare days of food and PTO after Labor Day.
- Cleanup is a second trip inside the same trip. Apply in spring 2027, not at Greeters.
If you say whether the cabin is one night or three, and whether cleanup is a hope or a submitted application, the calendar can be tightened to exact hotel cities and reservation dates.
