MOOP removal techniques

MOOP removal is a method, not a last-hour scramble. Dust buries anything that hits the ground; Restoration’s job is easier if you never let a camp become a red square on the MOOP map.

Prevent first

Tools that actually work

Tool Use
Landscape rake Comb dunes; wood chips and butts rise to the surface
Push broom Knock camp dunes flat so they don’t harden after rain
Magnet sweeper with release lever Nails, screws, bottle caps, welding slag
Metal detector Buried lags and rebar (the #1 leftover hazard)
Dustpan + bucket Fine debris after raking
Vise grips / multi-tool Yank buried stakes
Gloves, hat, water You will be bent over in sun

Rake a pass one way, then 90 degrees. A second perpendicular rake always turns up more.

The line sweep (core technique)

Official spacing: arm’s width ≈ 6 ft per person.
People needed ≈ width of the plot ÷ 6. A 30-ft-wide two-person camp is five passes of two people, not one casual wander.

  1. Pick a straight edge (street or tent line).
  2. Line up, arms out, fingertips almost touching the next person.
  3. Walk slowly. Eyes on a 3-ft strip in front of your feet, not the horizon.
  4. Squat or use a “MOOP stick” (grabber). Don’t hinge at the waist for an hour.
  5. Serpentine a little inside your lane so you don’t miss the edges.
  6. First pass is assessment. Mark a hot spot with a cone, bag, or upright stick. Do not stop the whole line to dig a nest of wood chips.
  7. Second and third passes until the ground reads clear / white, not yellow or red.
  8. After structures are gone, sweep again. Teardown creates new MOOP.

Two-person version: walk the grid in lanes. Repeat until you are bored. Boredom means you are almost done.

Daily camp rhythm (Resto’s 15-minute rule)

Specific debris

Metal
Roll the magnet sweeper over kitchen, shade pads, and any build area. Dump with the release lever into the sharp-jug. Then metal-detect the pad footprints.

Wood
Rake, pick, rake again. Charcoal larger than a quarter comes out. Ash from a burn barrel goes home in a lidded metal can, not onto playa. Elevate burn barrels so they don’t scar.

Burn scar / black crust
That is a condition, not litter. Don’t pretend a broom fixes fired playa. Scrape loose ash into a can; leave deep scars for Restoration Special Forces. Prevention (elevation, fire blankets, no ground fires) is the only good camp technique.

Spills
Stop the leak. Scoop contaminated playa into a bucket if it fits; pack it out. Fuel and blackwater over small volumes are radio-the-Rangers problems, not DIY. Put a drip barrier under the car after you scrape.

Gray water
Never on playa. Evaporate in a contained system or pump. Wet playa plus soap is an inspection fail.

Micro trash
Hair, glow-stick juice, carpet fuzz, pistachio shells, cigarette filters. These are what turn a camp yellow on the public MOOP map. Hands and a dustpan after the rake.

Strike order (Sunday, not Monday noon)

  1. Pack the kitchen and costumes.
  2. Count lags out; detector pass.
  3. Take structures down.
  4. Broom the dunes flat.
  5. Magnet + rake.
  6. Full line sweep.
  7. Second line sweep at 90°.
  8. Walk the street in front of camp.
  9. Then give the two community hours Earth Guardians / DPW Depot asked for.

If an area is a disaster, cone it and keep moving. Restoration’s “oscillators” exist so the line does not die on one hot spot. In a two-person camp you are the special forces: finish the grid, then go back and kill the cones.

Highway MOOP (your Exodus job)

A bag that blows on 447 is still MOOP. Net and ratchet the load so it does not shift when you shove it. Hexayurt foam and loose cardboard are infamous road debris. If it moves when you shake the pile, it will fly at 70 mph.

Two-person kit to pack

Landscape rake, push broom, cheap magnet sweeper (~$30), metal detector or at least a magnet-on-a-stick, two MOOP jugs, work gloves, flagging for lags, dustpan, a few cones or tall sticks, vise grips. That is enough to leave a CR-V camp looking like unused playa instead of a yellow square.
