Track Resources — Additional Focus Areas

Concept art & storyboard · Motion graphics · Virtual production

These tracks are fully available for project proposals. Coverage here is lighter than the four primary tracks — bring your proposal to Week 1 and the instructor will point you at discipline-specific resources.

Concept Art & Storyboard

Market reality

Be clear-eyed: this is the discipline most directly pressured by generative AI, and hiring has contracted. It is not closed — but the roles that remain reward production thinking over rendering skill, since rendering is the part most easily automated.

What still gets hired: designers who can solve production problems, work in 3D-assisted workflows, iterate fast under direction, and hand off something buildable. Storyboard artists remain in steadier demand than illustrative concept artists because the work is about staging, continuity, and clarity rather than finish.

Skills that matter now

Software: Photoshop, Procreate, Blender, Unreal, Storyboard Pro (the storyboard industry standard), Clip Studio Paint, Gravity Sketch.

Resources

Project ideas

P1: reconstruct a production design or boarded sequence from a film or game — analyze the underlying thinking, then rebuild it. P2 (teach one technique from P1): 3D blockout-to-paintover pipeline · Storyboard Pro animatic production · Gravity Sketch VR ideation. P3 (fill your portfolio gap): a full visual development package for an original property — character, environment, prop, and a keyframe — or a fully boarded and timed sequence with animatic.

Portfolio note

Show process and iteration, not just finals. A page of twenty thumbnails leading to one developed design is worth more than the design alone, because it demonstrates the thing AI does not: directed problem-solving. Callouts, orthographics, and material breakdowns signal production readiness.

Motion Graphics

Market reality

The healthiest adjacent market in this list. Motion design work exists well outside entertainment — brand, product, UI, broadcast, social, and increasingly real-time. Demand is spread across agencies, in-house teams, and freelance, which means more entry points than film or games offer.

Project ideas

P1: rebuild a title sequence or broadcast package shot for shot. P2 (teach one technique from P1): Unreal for real-time motion design · procedural motion in Houdini · expression-driven rigging in After Effects. P3 (fill your portfolio gap): a complete brand or broadcast package — logo animation, lower thirds, transitions, and an end card, delivered as a style guide plus a reel.

Portfolio note

30–60 seconds, cut to music, tightly edited. Motion reels are judged on rhythm and taste as much as on technique. Show the range of a full package rather than isolated effects.

Virtual Production

Market reality

A genuine growth area and one where formal training is scarce, which is an advantage for anyone who gets in early. Background plates for in-camera VFX on LED stages are real-time work, and Unreal is the dominant tool. Employers value LED volume integration and camera tracking experience explicitly.

The catch is equipment access. Scope your project around what you can actually reach — a full LED volume is not required to demonstrate the competencies.

P1: deconstruct a published in-camera VFX shot — rebuild the environment as a real-time set and match the shot with camera tracking. P2 (teach one technique from P1): nDisplay setup · camera tracking and lens calibration · ACES color pipeline · real-time compositing. P3 (fill your portfolio gap): a complete virtual set built to real-time performance budgets, with a demonstrated camera move, correct color pipeline, and either an in-camera or a composited final shot.

Portfolio note

Show the technical setup, not just the final image. Frustum visualization, tracking data, performance metrics, the color pipeline, and side-by-side raw versus final. Virtual production hiring is technical hiring — the people evaluating you want to see that you understand the system.

A note on choosing

If you are torn between one of these and a primary track, the deciding question is not which is most interesting. It is: what does the job you want in eighteen months actually require, and can you build evidence of it in five weeks?

Bring both options to Week 1 with a scoped plan for each. That conversation is what the first consultation is for.
