Create the project
About 10 minutes.
Learning objectives
- Create a Unity 6 project from the Universal 3D template
- Store it on a local disk path Unity can trust
- Confirm SampleScene opens with Scene view and Game view
Before you start
Use Unity 6. Pick the 6.x editor you already have installed (Unity 6.1 or later; Unity 6.3 LTS is fine). Do not create this project in Unity 2022 or earlier.
Official Hub steps: Create your first project | Unity Manual
Create the project in Unity Hub
- Open Unity Hub.
- Select Projects.
- Select New project.
- Set Editor version to your installed Unity 6 editor.
You should see: a template grid and fields for project name and location.

- Select the Universal 3D template (URP, empty 3D).

Why this matters: Universal 3D is the current empty 3D starting point. Do not pick the old Built-in 3D template. If this course section is 2D, use Universal 2D instead and keep every Input System step the same.
- Set Project name to
InputSystemStarter(or the name your instructor gave you). - Set Location to a folder on your local disk.
Warning: Do not put the project in OneDrive, Dropbox, iCloud, Google Drive, or any other cloud-synced folder. Unity can warn that this corrupts projects. Use a path such as
C:\Dev\Unityor~/Dev/Unity.
- Select Create project.
You should see: Hub opens the Unity Editor and the first import begins. Wait. Do not click around until the Editor is idle.
After the Editor opens
- Confirm the open scene is SampleScene (look at the Hierarchy window title and the tab above the Scene view).
- Confirm you have a Scene view and a Game view (they may be tabs in the same panel).
- Press Play once, then press Play again to stop.
You should see: a blank Game view (sky / camera clear color) and no console errors from this empty scene.
- Open Window > Package Manager and leave it reachable. You will use it on the next page.
Checkpoint
Before you continue to Enable the Input System:
- The project opens in a Unity 6 editor without import errors
- SampleScene is the open scene
- Window > Package Manager opens
