Week 3 — The Verb
GAME 1303 · Tuesday, September 8, 2026 · 9:00 AM – 1:50 PM
Every game is about one verb. Today you isolate yours and build it on a bare test course — no art, no levels, just the action.
This week at a glance
| Block | Time | What happens |
|---|---|---|
| Lecture | 9:00 – 10:15 | Design topic + engine features |
| Exercise | 10:30 – 11:45 | Ex 2 — The Verb — 2 pts, submitted today |
| Lab | 12:00 – 1:50 | Work on your semester project |
Before class
- Decide which verb your game is about. One sentence: "The player ___ in order to ___."
- Import the helper package if you haven't.
- Start your One Sheet — due next week.
Lecture topics
| Section | Topics |
|---|---|
| 001 — Unity 6.x | GameObjects, components, Transform · Prefabs and variants · The helper script library |
| 002 — Unreal 5.8 | Actors, components, transforms · Blueprint classes · The helper Blueprint library |
Exercise — Ex 2 — The Verb
One mechanic — dash, grab, shoot, swap, grapple, or interact — tuned and tested against three escalating obstacles.
Open the version for your section:
Worth 2 points: one for Implementation (it builds and runs, the feature works), one for the Design decision (a deliberate, defensible choice beyond the defaults). Due at the end of the class period — late work earns the Implementation point only.
Lab goals
- Apply your verb to your own project, not just the test course.
- One Sheet work.
- Scope conversations — this is the week to simplify if the pitch was ambitious.
Due this week
| What | When | Points |
|---|---|---|
| Ex 2 — The Verb | end of class | 2 pts |
Run the matching tab of the course checklist before you submit. Every box on it is a graded criterion.
